In a year marked by the release of their highly anticipated new album “Satellites,” The Script continues to captivate audiences with their signature blend of heartfelt lyrics and dynamic musical compositions. As they embark on a global tour, including a memorable stint supporting P!nk, the band’s latest single “At Your Feet” has quickly become a fan favorite. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the band to discuss the inspiration behind their new music, their creative process, and what fans can look forward to in the coming months. Join us as we delve into the minds of The Script and explore the stories behind their latest musical journey.
Congratulations on the release of “At Your Feet”! Can you share the inspiration behind this single?
My girlfriend is the reason the song was written. I was trying to think of something nice to do for her after all she’s done for me.
How did you come up with the idea for “At Your Feet” while watching football?
It was a commentator who said a footballer should be playing with the world at his feet, not on his shoulders, and I thought, hang on? That’s brilliant! So, I twisted the lyric and gave it a spin at the end of the chorus to be the penultimate line. Back of the net, as they say!
The song features soaring choruses and dramatic quiet/loud dynamics. Can you elaborate on how you achieved this sound in the studio?
We went for a low octave verse which is very relaxed with a high five in falsetto tucked in behind it to give it a certain feel. Then, when the chorus kicks in with the melody an octave up and singing full voice, it’s very powerful. Again, after that chorus going up further with the post-chorus repeat of the words “at your feet,” it just keeps climbing.
Can you describe the creative process and collaboration with producer Steve Robson on this track?
Very easy. Most things that are right feel easy, and Steve has a great way about him in the studio. Very relaxed and assured, so it was a pleasure writing it with him and Wayne Hector. We work great as a team together.
“At Your Feet” is described as uniting your key strengths as a band. How do you feel this song represents The Script’s musical identity?
It’s emotional, heartfelt, and melancholic; all the hallmarks of a great Script song. Of course, it’s played on drums, bass, guitar, and piano, key instruments of the band. Nothing more, nothing less.
Your new album “Satellites” is set to release on August 16th. What can fans expect from this album in terms of themes and musical direction?
It’s an album that’s very lyrically heavy with twists and turns all over the place. We cover most topics going on in everyone’s life right now—happiness, sadness, optimism, the light and shade of life. Musically, it’s simply a band in a studio having the best time distracting themselves from the world around them. It was a real escape for us and hopefully for the listener too.
You mentioned that the lyric “I’d rather take the world off your shoulders and put it at your feet” came together quickly. Can you talk about the songwriting process and any challenges you faced?
The challenge is the idea or the punchline. What is it you want to say in the song, and at what part of the chorus are you gonna say it—last? First? I find story songs are the best to illustrate a person’s struggle. The listener gets led down the storyline and ultimately ends up wherever you want them with whatever the point of your song is. But the song has to have a point of existing—something I had to say instead of something I wanted to say; there’s a big difference.
The album will be available in various formats, including a limited edition hardback book, CD, and vinyl. What was the motivation behind offering these special editions?
To cover every medium from top to bottom. It’s hard to believe, but there are people who still listen to CDs—and vinyl has made a huge comeback in recent years. I believe we’re even doing a tape cassette. Some of it is utility, but some of it is nostalgia and just for the fun of it.
You’re currently on tour with P!nk and will be embarking on a headline tour in November. How has the tour experience been so far, and what can fans look forward to in your upcoming shows?
We’ve always been a band that’s not scared of supporting other artists, we just want to get out and play for people. We could have just put our own tickets on sale and headlined our own shows, but we believe the only place success comes before touring is in the dictionary. You need to get out in front of different crowds for you to evolve. Preaching to the converted is nice, but you want to expand and grow, and a support slot is the best way to do that.
The demand for your headline tour has been phenomenal, with additional dates added in Belfast and Dublin. How does it feel to receive such a strong response from your fans?
Incredible, and also a direct reflection on the ethos that we got out in front of other music-loving fans and they see us live and understand what this is. People have a preconceived idea of me and the band because I was on the telly or something. But when they see us live, they realize we were on the telly because we’re a shit-hot band that knows how to put on a great show and have been doing it all for 17 years now!
Can you share any special moments or highlights from your tour with P!nk?
Dedicating a song to Mark Sheehan every night. It’s been amazing to get to celebrate his life around the world and with so many people. We’re astounded by the prayers and well-wishing we’ve been receiving.
Tom Walker will be joining you on your headline tour from November 13th to December 7th. How did this collaboration come about?
We’ve toured together loads over the years. When he was on the way up, we toured the States together and everything. He’s a great guy, super talented, and puts on a great show—just what you want.
Your official store is offering a chance to win a special prize package, including the jacket Danny wore when meeting the Queen. Can you tell us more about this promotion?
I’ve loads of old jackets from different promotions we’ve done, so recently I’ve given them to the official merch store to do anything they want with them as I’m clearing them all out. I gave HMV The Man Who Can’t Be Moved jacket and everything. Need to clear out the attic!
You’ve recently been honored with a BRITs Billion Award. How does it feel to reach such a significant milestone in your career?
We were nominated for four and never won, so finally, it feels amazing to have gotten it without even trying, lol. That award goes to our fans for all the streaming they do.
With a total audience of 2 million people this year, how do you prepare for performing on such a large scale?
Take each performance as it comes. You don’t have to be 2 million times better than you normally are. The pressure’s off. It will be our 7th time around the Earth, so we’re well used to the sizes of places and what’s expected. I’m excited to bring Satellites to life and show everyone what you can achieve even after you’ve gone through the worst period in your life.
What are some of the key messages or emotions you hope to convey through “At Your Feet” and the “Satellites” album?
Gratitude, forgiveness, honesty, and openness. We’ve always been an open book for people to see inside, and this is no different. It’s someone my age living in the times we’re living in, going through shit and trying to make sense of it.
How has your music evolved from your previous albums to “Satellites”?
If you listen, we’re one of the most experimental bands out there. 17 years ago till now, we’ve been blending rap, rock, pop, funk, ballads, alternative—anything and everything into the pot. But we’re still trying to evolve into the best version of ourselves, and we feel we’re closer to it with this offering.
Can you share any behind-the-scenes stories from the recording of “At Your Feet” or the “Satellites” album?
We ended up changing the production all the way up to the deadline day for the record. We went through 7-8 different versions of the first verse until we landed on the one we have now. It’s always like that—it’s never finished, it just gets taken out of your hands, lol.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians looking to make their mark in the industry?
I’ve no idea these days. I’m at a loss for words on what to tell people just starting out. The lay of the land is so different—you almost have to be a content creator and be versed in visuals and music combined to make a dint on the scene these days. It’s pretty grim for people starting out. Get your followers and numbers up before a label even looks at you—it’s mad.
What’s next for The Script after the release of “Satellites” and your headline tour? Any new projects or collaborations on the horizon?
I’m gonna take a big break. I always head back into the studio no matter what, so I’ll be somewhere in some studio trying to write the song that changes the world—even if it just changes my mood, then job done, lol.
