The Man Behind the County of Milan

Born in Argentina in 1976, designer Marcelo Burlon moved to Italy in 1990 with his parents and in 1997 relocated to Milan. Here, he worked as a gatekeeper in one of the city’s hottest night destinations – Magazzini Generali, where he became friends with Riccardo Tisci and Raf Simons. Then, he began DJ-ing and fell into PRs, where Tisci was his first client. 

The First T-Shirt Line

After a few years, Marcelo Burlon introduced his t-shirt line with a blend of the club culture of the 1990s and his native country Patagonia, in Argentina, where his first clients were his closest friends. 

Who would have thought it would sell more than 10,000 t-shirts to more than 90 stores, even in its first season? The County of Milan made it possible. 

Key motifs in the County of Milan’s t-shirts include a serpent around the neckline and a bird’s wingspan, created in collaboration with Burlon’s friend designer Giorgio di Salvo. His t-shirts were only available at €160 or $217 at that time. 

Quick Transformation 

A few years later, the Country of Milan became a million-dollar clothing brand, thanks to the unending support of Burlon’s close friends, such as Claudio Antonioli and Davide de Giglio. Antonioli looks after the business’s commercial side. On the other hand, Giglio is the one responsible for overseeing the entire production. 

From 90 stores, the County of Milan’s t-shirts is stocked in more than 250 stores in Italy and around Europe.

Popular stores that retail and sell t-shirts include Harvey Nicholas, Opening Ceremony, and Lane Crawford. 

Expansion of Product Line 

What’s more, the County of Milan has expanded its product lines: high-end swimwear, luxury bags, and quality/fashionable sneakers. They made the company a well-established, trusted, and one-stop-shop for varying markets.
