At a time where staying connected is more important than ever, House of Solo has launched ‘Party of One’, a series providing intimate insight into how your favourite artists are dealing with isolation and what we can expect from them during lockdown.
23-year-old Finnish punk pop singer Alma has a unique and addictive sound, topping global charts with tracks such as ‘Karma’ and ‘Dye My Hair’. She’s now treating us again, releasing her first album Have U Seen Her on May 15th. We caught up with the distinctive artist to chat about the concept behind her new album, her favourite live streams and what message she has for her teenage fanbase.
How are you feeling? I feel like my emotions seem to be more up and down than normal lately! Have you had any experience of this?
Yes my mood changes all the time! It’s weird to be inside all the time and I feel like I’ve got too much time to think about stuff! So yeah ups and downs! It’s getting easier though!
What do your isolation surroundings look like?
My house! Lots of clothes everywhere cuz I just finished touring in America! So everything is at my house! I also have music equipment everywhere!
You’ve said before that in your home country of Finland people are “very close to our families and never talk to anybody else”. How do you think this has affected Finnish people’s experience of lockdown?
I think people are more connected and together! I think this virus is horrible but it does a lot of good things as well! We are together and it feels good!
So you’re releasing your debut album ‘Have U Seen Her’ for the 15th May. Tell me about the concept for this album and what kind of preparations are you making to promote this while still under lockdown?
It’s about finding yourself! It’s a very honest album! I wanted to show every side of me and be as real as I can! And I think I did pretty well! I will be promoting it online, talking to fans way more on the internet and I will definitely make an online release party/show! Yeeey
So I read that your sister was your backing singer, drummer and co-creator. Does this mean you’ve been able to do some good family lockdown rehearsals?
Yes! She’s the best and we do a lot of creative things together! We have been creating lots of new stuff for people in this lockdown!
You’ve got a fantastic, distinctive look. Are you keeping it up during lockdown?
Hahaha NO! Most of the time I’m in the same hoodie and adidas pants!
There’s so many great live streams from musicians at the moment, which one have you enjoyed watching the most and why?
I really like the bug show Lady Gaga did with many artists!!
So you’ve played to crowds as big as 20,000 people at a festival in Berlin. Tell me a little about this experience, and how not being able to play live has affected you as an artist.
I’ve actually played lots of these kinds of shows! They are crazy! I love festival shows! And it’s heartbreaking that festivals are cancelled this year! It feels weird but we gotta do what we gotta do! And next year is gonna be beautiful!
I saw on your instagram that you’ve created a ‘find ALMA’ version of ‘Where’s Wally’. This obviously relates to your album release, but can you tell me more about the creation?
I’m just like that! It’s my bad habit that when I’m anxious or angry etc I just shut my phone and don’t answer for a couple of days! You need that sometimes though!
You’ve said before that if you weren’t a musician you’d be a social worker for teenagers. What message do you want to give to your teenage fanbase at this moment in time?
Yes! We gotta hold on tight and we gotta be open minded cause the world is changing! We don’t have to be scared because we are gonna be fine, but it’s just gonna take a little time! Now it’s a perfect time to learn a new skill or talent and use this time for yourself!
What future plan are you most excited for?
Ah man! Getting back on the road someday! With this new album! I know I will love every second of it!
