Lyrically, ‘You’ presents itself as a confessional tale of devotion and unconditional love, with this stripped-back release seeing Carrie at her most open and intimate. Baxter truly unveils all in this track as it is not only a one-take recording, it is a completely unfiltered version of the single with no alterations from its live presentation. Led only by piano, the bare nature of the track gives Carries enchanting vocal the space to soar, with her raspy tone adding alluring character to the tender narrative, as she blossoms on this acoustic re-imagining.
“If I could do an alternate version of every track I would, specifically just me and a pianist (my favourite instrument) There’s something about the romance of this song and it needing a piano on this version. The space I have to sing and the words being allowed to breathe is the stuff I live for.
The live video, accompanying the release, is a stunning one-take visual illumination of the raw talent of Carrie. Recorded totally live, with absolutely zero tweaks to the audio or visual, it is fair to say the video is an honest reflection of this burgeoning artist’s unique vocals, immense potential and a humble offering of what a Carrie Baxter live show would offer.
“I love singing live, ultimately it’s what I do it for. I usually try to stick to minimal takes in the studio at all times but this time, luckily or unluckily I was going through a pretty tough time when we recorded this so I trusted myself enough to deliver raw emotion in one take.”
‘You’ is one of my favourite lyrical pieces I have ever written and I think it deserved a second chance in the spotlight. So many artists were releasing so much music amidst Covid when this song came out so it’s only fair it gets another shot to be heard in a new way.”
